Carl works the angles. Mongo deals the damage.
Review & Summary
Carl’s Doomsday Scenario is the second book in Matt Dinniman’s Dungeon Crawler Carl series, and I enjoyed this one just as much as the first book. Carl and Donut continue their descent, with more quests, more danger, and plenty of the Dungeons & Dragons-style mechanics you would expect from a LitRPG adventure. At this point, I expect those mechanics to be a regular part of the series. I’m quite happy to keep reading on those terms.
The familiar characters carry the story forward, but Mongo takes a more active role this time. If we’re talking RPG roles, he’s coming into his own as DPS. He’s a vicious fighter, still a bit unhinged and sometimes out of control. Keeping him pointed in the right direction is part of the problem, and watching him take on a bigger role is one of the things I liked about this installment.
Two major quests drive the story: one built on clever problem-solving, the other on mystery.
The first takes Carl and Donut into a traveling circus and feels like the start of a much longer story, with consequences I expect to follow Carl into future books. I particularly enjoyed how Carl maneuvered the people behind the quest into helping him survive.
The circus quest also gives us my favorite line in the Dungeon Crawler Carl world so far: Donut’s “Mongo is appalled!” Her speaking for a vicious, barely controllable dinosaur makes it even better.
The other quest is more of a whodunit, with quite a few twists along the way. I won’t get into the answers, because figuring out what is going on is part of the fun. Even the ending caught me off guard, with the whole thing building into an intense brush with death. The mystery gives you something to puzzle over while the danger keeps the pressure on.
That combination worked very well for me. The quests move the larger story forward while giving this book its own mysteries and close calls. Carl, Donut, and Mongo are good company for another trip through the dungeon, even if traveling with them would be terrible for your life expectancy.
Final Verdict
Carl’s Doomsday Scenario earns another five stars from me. Mongo’s growing combat role, Carl’s clever handling of the quests, and a mystery with a tense, satisfying finish made this an easy book to keep reading. I’m already into book three, The Dungeon Anarchist’s Cookbook.
Recommended for: Readers who enjoyed Dungeon Crawler Carl and want more RPG adventuring, clever quest solutions, and mysteries with real danger.
